Go Beyond: Yondur’s 3 step Career Path Optimisation

With all the options out there, choosing a career path can be challenging. Finding a role that represents your skills and attributes can be daunting. That’s why we’ve come up with a quick three-step guide to help you pick the right career for you!

STEP 1 – Assess Yourself & Know Your Present Self.

First, you need to think about who you are, what you enjoy, and what you excel at. Once those things are clear and outlined, you will find choosing a career that matches your skills and interests much easier.

Start with a pen and paper. You’ve got to be willing to be honest about yourself; we’ll call this the ‘Self SWOT’. Don’t stress; no one else is going to see the results— just you. To make it easier to start your ‘self SWOT analysis’, we have come up with a few useful questions:

  • What subjects did you enjoy at school?
  • Which subjects did you do well in?
  • What do you not enjoy?
  • Where could you see yourself working? (Environment, City, Industry)
  • What are your strengths/limitations?
  • What is your dream job?
  • Which sector(s) do you want to avoid?
  • Do you want to work alone or as part of a team?

Use your self SWOT to figure out your current strengths, weaknesses, potential threats that will hold you back from your goals and opportunities that are within your reach when you put your mind to it.

Once these questions have been answered, the next step is to make use of career match self-assessment tools to further outline your personal qualities and strengths. Tools like this are useful, as they help you make fewer biased decisions about your career options. They will give you a more truthful representation of a good career choice for you personally, based on your talent and traits, not just your desires.

Step 2 – Dream big: It’s Never too Late.

There is more than one path that can lead you to your future career, and many job roles in the world, so there is more than one option for you. Luckily, there’s no one set path to a career destination. So, whatever career you choose, your skills and interests are transferable to all kinds of industries and career paths —even some you haven’t heard of yet. The fun part is figuring out all the options available to you.  Just relax —there are far more careers that could be a good match for you than you ever imagined!

Whether you’ve got University on your mind or you like the sound of an apprenticeship, it doesn’t matter what route you take.  Either way, you can make your career what you want if you put in the work. For example, Steve Jobs started small and worked his way up. There are many University courses available, as well as apprenticeships, or even work your way up in an organisation. No matter what, it’s all about finding what’s right for you.

Step 3 – Review your Career Options & Go for It!

After you’ve assessed your strengths, skills and interests, you should have a clear list of careers to think about. It’s a good idea to start with a long list with at least ten career choices. Don’t get caught up on just one career path only in case you don’t love it as much as you think you would. You don’t need to settle once you’re in a job either —if it doesn’t work, don’t be disheartened, you can try something new!

It is a good idea to pick a career that interests you. After all, if you’ve got the interest and passion, you can build on the skills and qualifications needed later. Just remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. You can always learn something new if it doesn’t work out, or if you fancy a change of scenery. Shorten your list to 2 or 3 top career choices —don’t forget to aim high! Remember to keep an open mind. More than one career could be the right one for you.  Once you’ve made your choice, go for it!
