Many news outlets and publications are scaremongering its readers into believing that automation is bound to take your job. This is not true. The reality is, there will be new jobs for you. New jobs that require new skill sets, meaning current employees will be tasked with reskilling to fit these roles. Employers are focusing on reskilling their best employees to accommodate the changing world of AI and automation.
After all, the McKinsey Global Institute reports only 5% of jobs will be fully automated, so where’s the harm in allowing a machine to do some of your tasks?
The reality of automation
Gartner, a global research and advisory business, suggest 10 million new jobs will be created from automation and AI over the next 5 years. It is true that some jobs will be susceptible to automation, those in the manufacturing, and retail industries, but it also plans to create new jobs. The job market is always changing. Roles are being created that weren’t around 20 years ago, such as mobile app developers.
What new jobs may there be?
In the next 20 years, employment will increase in many sectors, most of which are human connection based. These include roles within health care, science and technology, and communications. PwC say 7 million existing jobs could be displaced by AI from 2017-2037, however around 7.2 million may be created, so it’s not a total loss. Most of your job roles are safe because they require an element of human interaction that AI and machines can’t live up to. Jobs in health care (nurses, doctors etc) will see an increase of 22%, and in the scientific and technical services an increase of 16%.
You may find yourself over the next 5 years doing less physical work, data processing and information collecting, because machines can do them for us. This isn’t something to fear, it means the repetitive tasks of your job are no longer your responsibility. It’s something that can change your life for the better. Does doing the same computer-based tasks everyday bore you? Do you think your skills and talents could be used to a better advantage? Automation means you can work on yourself, work on your personal projects that actually mean something to you. You can be productive and creative.
Productivity levels will no doubt increase with the inclusion of automation, because you can use your time elsewhere, working on tasks that are more progressive and meaningful to you.
